Workshop series: Fragile Bodies, The recognition of the fragile body in the city

The Fondation Braillard Architectes, in partnership with the Institute of Sociological Research of the University of Geneva, is offering a series of workshops built around democratic experiences of including the human body, with its fragilities, in the urban realm and in public policy-making.

Workshop 1: The fragile body in architecture

Organised by the University of Geneva, Sandro Cattacin, Fiorenza Gamba, Nikolena Nocheva and the project’s 4EU+ partners: Henriette Steiner (University of Copenhagen), Mark Vacher (University of Copenhagen), Tomàš Karásek (Charles University).

Speakers: Cristina Bianchetti (Politecnico di Torino), Paolo Fusi (HafenCity University – Hamburg)
Speakers: Panos Mantzarias (Fondation Braillard Architectes), Francesco Della Casa (Canton of Geneva)

How might architects design the city for the fragile body? This question lies at the heart of the first dialogue of our 4EU+ European University Alliance project «The recognition of the fragile body in the city: an interdisciplinary perspective on fundamental European values». Two architects will open the discussion on «the fragile body in architecture».

On the one hand, Cristina Bianchetti, professor of urbanism at the Politecnico di Torino, focuses on the contemporary critique of urban design. Her work on the relationship between space and bodies brings the arrangement of bodies into focus. Her view of the body as an intermediary between space and the person leads to reading shared experiences, in housing, in the use of public space and in everyday encounters, as the foreground of architectural intervention.

On the other hand, Paolo Fusi, professor of urbanism at HafenCity University Hamburg, seeks to introduce the theme of multiplicity into both the (historically established) design and the use of the same spaces. Cities characterised by this twofold multiplicity deserve care, says Fusi, even more care than we are accustomed to giving our own private living environments.

Panos Mantzarias, architect, director of the Fondation Braillard Architectes (Geneva) and project partner, and Francesco Della Casa, cantonal architect of the Canton of Geneva, will discuss how cities of difference can be designed.
