A word from the photographer:

These photographs seek the magic of volumes, in the play of materials and materials, in light. They are not an apology for the architecture of the great masters, known or not.

In the heterogeneous assemblage of meeting elements of a vernacular architecture for and by its users, indigents seeking only the precarious shelter of survival, at a minimum, the antithesis of Vitruvius, arousing the bitter emotion of a protest of the scandal of shanty towns.

In counterpoint to the learned, subtly thoughtful beauties of prestigious, refined and deliberate architecture, here are utilitarian, modest, spontaneous constructions, creating intuitively harmonious, simply natural volumes: of bricks and broc.

I would like to see from this series of photographs the feeling, the spirit of what the essence of architecture is, the most complete, ultimate expression of the social human being. This constitutes a draft, an attempt.

Marc-Albert Braillard, Thônex, August 20, 2019 (revised in August 2023)

Archi-critic, archimini

Considering the “Archimini” (minimum architectures, without architects) as examples to follow is not my intention, but on the contrary as visions, visual escapes on the habitable building which must stimulate a poetic gaze, the dream of spaces daily life, a flight towards an acceptable life, an antinomic metaphor for the slums.

A critical look, where appropriate, at the spaces, volumes, colors (contrasts of values) which condition — oh so much! — our daily life and shape our minds, our moods, our thoughts, our dreams, our violence, our tenderness, our views on others or reflections, our ardor, our coldness, our mental and physical health, our… Our being and well-being.
