Marginal territory, regional strength
A new habitability in marginal territories through the restoration of heritage landscapes
The abandonment of Europe’s rural villages and landscapes is a growing phenomenon with serious consequences. Yet these marginal territories, as they are now called, have a fundamental role to play, particularly in the management of natural hazards. Taking as its case study the mountain village of Penalva de Alva (Portugal), regularly afflicted by fires and floods, this project explores how restoring the local landscape heritage becomes a key design lever for moving towards a new habitability.
