• WHY NO CAR?

  At the 10th Venice Biennale of Architecture (2006), we proposed the subject “Water and Asphalt. The Project of Isotropy”. This was the start of investigations into the consequences of a radical change in terms of mobility – the No Car scenario – for cities and regions. This scenario has otherwise opened up our imagination and shed some light on a wide range of challenges and possibilities for the future of urban spaces. The intervention re-examines the constructive role of a radical hypothesis in the conceptualisation of dispersed metropolitan and territorial fabrics (Brussels 2040, Alpine and Lake Geneva metropolis). This can be achieved by reconfiguring public space, biodiversity and water management, by a new spatial conception of body and social, through the prism of current radical demographic and social changes.
  Between collective environmental choices and individual emancipation, the question to be discussed is in the title: why, indeed, “without cars”? The followed hypothesis is that, beyond neo-functional and technological solutions, No Car participates in reconstructing the biopolitical problem. It highlights the project’s balance between biology and politics, and the need for a new radical reflection around space.
