1000 Arbres (1000 Trees) – Foresight Cycle

Together, let us design today the public spaces of tomorrow.

Exhibition, lectures, professional workshops

In the face of the climate emergency, the question of trees in the city has become a central issue in urban transformation. Organised by the Fondation Braillard Architectes and the Republic and Canton of Geneva, the 1000 Arbres foresight cycle brings together, over three days, the general public, practitioners, researchers and urban stakeholders around a shared ambition: to rethink the public spaces of tomorrow in the light of climate adaptation.

An exhibition, public lectures and professional workshops follow one another at the Jardins de la Jonction and the Fondation Braillard Architectes, bringing different perspectives together to shape, collectively, the contours of a more resilient city.

Detailed workshop programme

Wednesday 2 September 09:00–12:00 – Workshop 1
Designing the ecological transition through public space

What brief for climate-responsive public spaces?

Fondation Braillard Architectes (16 rue Saint-Léger, Geneva)

This workshop will reflect collectively on how project processes and design briefs for future climate-responsive public spaces might evolve.

It will take the form of a collective brainstorming session, bringing together interdisciplinary experts, designers and representatives of public authorities to consider the means of action available and the changes needed in project practice.

The aim is to produce, collectively, the foundations of an ideal design brief for future climate-responsive public spaces, identifying in particular the key stages, tools, metrics and regulatory changes needed to achieve them.

Invited experts:

  • the winners of the Europan 18 Competition: Kollectif Landscape and 7 lieues
  • Aleth de Crécy, Co-President of the FSAP
  • Pauline Hosotte, Fondation Modus
  • Bruno Doedens, landscape architect and artist, designer of the Bosk project in Leeuwarden
  • Julien Forbat, sociologist, University of Geneva
  • Philippe Viala, OU – Public Spaces Delivery Directorate

Wednesday 2 September 14:00–17:00 – Workshop 2
The Water – Soil – Tree Triptych

From project to construction site, from concept to reality

Meeting point at 14:00 at the Fondation Braillard Architectes (16 rue Saint-Léger, Geneva)

A visit to the Rue de Carouge construction site, preceded by a presentation by the project’s consultants, will offer an opportunity to compare the ambitions of a public space project with its practical implementation.

Through the Water – Soil – Tree triptych, the workshop will address issues such as greening, mobility and pedestrianisation, focusing on the technical, spatial and operational conditions that make it possible to move from concept to construction.

This visit is intended for architects, landscape architects, urban planners, engineers, staff of the municipalities and of the Canton of Geneva, and all professionals involved in the design, delivery or management of public spaces.

Beyond the discovery of an exemplary project, this visit offers a valuable opportunity for designers, clients and technical specialists to exchange views on the concrete challenges of adapting cities to climate change.

Visit coordinated by Gaëtan Seguin (OCEau) and the InSitu practice

Thursday 3 September 09:00–12:00 – Workshop 3
Tree planting for the future: from seed to canopy

Fondation Braillard Architectes (16 rue Saint-Léger, Geneva)

Organised around four discussion tables, the workshop will bring together botanists, nursery growers, landscape architects, landscapers and planning professionals to compare perspectives, share lessons learned and better understand the interdependencies between their professions.

Experts:

  • Jonas Baumgartner – Landscaper, Baumgartner Jonas SA
  • Fabien Khaletzky – Landscape Architect HES/FSAP, Head of Landscape Architecture, CCHE Lausanne SA
  • Pascal Martin – Scientific Associate, Geneva Botanical Garden (JBG)

Of trees and people

Thinking about public space from the perspective of health: physical, mental and social

Fondation Braillard Architectes (16 rue Saint-Léger, Geneva)

This workshop invites a shift in perspective: what if health became a central design criterion for climate-responsive public spaces?

Four areas of expertise will address in turn the effects of climate change on physical health, mental health, social health and biodiversity. Discussions will also cover residents’ relationship with trees and public spaces, and the links between tree planting, canopy, comfort and health.

The aim will be to develop concrete recommendations for better integrating these dimensions into future public space projects.

Experts:

  • Sarah Koller, Ecopsychologist, Competence Centre in Sustainability, University of Lausanne
  • Serge Mimoumi, Social Cohesion Directorate, Canton of Geneva
  • 2 experts in physical health and biodiversity
